I’m an associate professor in the Journalism Department at Elon University. Our well-regarded School of Communication serves around 1,100 majors, or about 20 percent of our student population of around 6,000 undergraduates.
Before my career in higher education, I spent 25 years as a writer, reporter and columnist, mostly with daily newspapers in California, Hawai’i and Japan. My longest tenure was with The Modesto Bee. In my last news job, I covered business and the economy in Asia-Pacific for The Honolulu Advertiser (now Star-Advertiser). I also covered the overseas U.S. military community as a bureau chief for Stars & Stripes and served as a copy editor for Nikkei Weekly in Tokyo.
In my not-so-spare moments, as a senior writer for Volleyball Monthly and Volleyball magazines, I chronicled competition of international volleyball, attending five Olympic tournaments and working at even more world championships and World Cups, among other events.
